Things I've Never Done

I have never flown a kite.
I have never tried funnel cake.
I have never seen the waterfall that is rumored to be near Mack Town.

Actually, there are a million-and-one things I've also never done, but these three are particularly regrettable and, more importantly, fixable. With Thanksgiving Break coming up, two of these things are on my to-do list. The funnel cake will have to wait until next summer when the carnival comes to town.

The photo of Mill Creek Falls is from the McKinleyville Press blog and by one of my favorite photographers and brave adventurers, Jack Durham.

I've done everything but the falls.

We even used to build our own kites as kids. Mom always used to wonder why she could never find her crochet string.

Your own Bucket list! (with, hopefully, less than immediately dire endings.)

I have a many experiences on my own bucket list--publishing a novel isn't as easily fixable as those you listed but a lot of are. I should get cracking.

I just remembered another one: digging for clams. Here I only live a couple of miles from Clam Beach, so there's really no excuse. But I have gone on a grunion run. Anyone know what that is?

It sounds that you are going to have a magnificent Thanksgiving Break: I can think of few better ways to spend the season of gratitude than amongst friends flying kites and also poetic waterfalls with water's furious rhythms pounding on your feet! Have the time of your life :)

BTW, nope, I've never heard of a "grunion run." (sounds a little snarly!)

Take Care,
Kristen

I've been on a grunion run! It was by accident though, my friend and I were wandering around on the beach and saw a bunch of people standing around staring at something, so we joined in. They told us all about the grunion, but thought we were nerds for just showing up and not having any idea what we were doing...I've never seen the waterfall either! Where is is?

I have directions to it! Want to go with me on a little hike, Lucy?

I'm at work right now, but tomorrow I'll write about grunion runs. It will be perfect for the natural history series Ernie and I seem to have going on right now. :)

You have to try the funnel cake at the Humboldt County Fair. Go into the crafts building and buy it from the little old ladies in the kitchen. It's awesome!

I remember watching a film in school about grunion hunts. They're real, not like the "Squeegee hunts" we'd do in Girl Scouts. But, Indie, I've had in mind to dig clams and come home to make chowder but don't want to buy a license without knowing what I'm doing. I've thought about showing up with a shovel/spading fork and helping someone else just for the lesson.

"I have never tried funnel cake."

My advice is to keep it that way.

About clam-digging: Jack told me I need a license, and that the surf should be low and mild, otherwise the clams dig in deeper. I think this is the right time of year...

Beachcomber, chowder is the very reason I want to do it! Tomorrow would be a perfect day, although it's looking a little rainy outside right now.

Sandi, you and CPR seem to disagree about funnel cake. But if it's anything like a donut, I'll probably love it.

Kym, a novel is on my Bucket List too.

Kristen, the truth is my magnificent break will probably also include a lot of housework and bill-paying and chauffeuring my son around. I'd have to be some kind of poet to make poetry out of that! But I can't wait to see the falls. You have a lovely holiday too!

I grew up doing grunion runs. I never see the nets anymore.
